Bodega Bar & Cantina

Lunch | Friday 4th November 2016

Bodega Bar & Cantina was launched as the 4th site in the Bitters n’ Twisted collection of family bars in 2010 and has remained a familiar and well visited destination on Bennett’s Hill for over six years.

The Latin American restaurant and bar is only a short walk from New Street Station and as well as being open throughout the week for you to sample its cocktails and cuisine, it regularly hosts masterclasses at it’s bar and dance classes and DJ nights on its lower floor.

I had chosen Bodega as the meeting point of a catch-up lunch with an old friend because of the vibrant decor and constant flutter of company that welcomes you into the lively atmosphere. The café-style seating, boldly coloured walls, wooden furniture and laid-back atmosphere gives the restaurant and bar a warmth throughout.

Bodega’s menu goes beyond the usual burritos and nachos, it showcases foods from not only Mexico, but Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Cuba and Argentina. That being said,it embraces both burritos and nachos particularly well, both accompanied by an abundance of salsa, sour cream and guacamole. A special mention however has to go out to their batatas fritas (£3.95) – these sweet potato fries with chipotle mayo are a must have from the extensive menu.

A daily Happy Hour is hosted from 4pm – 7pm and from 10pm –  close, with prices starting from £4.50, there are a variety of South American cocktails made with tequila, rum, vodka and cachaça. There is also a selection of bottled beers and wine amongst the drinks list. The menus are easy to navigate and the team are enthusiastic and easy-going,  they ensure the atmosphere is always buzzing and are open to any questions about the dishes and drinks.

Bodega has proven time and time again that it is a great place for a quick drink, spontaneous weekday lunch or even as a general gathering point. The ability to reserve and use the lower floor for larger events makes it a great place for those slightly bigger parties too. During the busier periods of the week (especially nearing the weekend), the use of the upper floor does get quite restricted due to the lack of space. Reserving a table before hand is recommended for tables of over three but walk-in spaces are generally available too.
